Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital and largest city of Arizona, located in the Salt River Valley in the south-central part of the state within Maricopa County. The city sits in the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert and is surrounded by more than 20 other cities and towns that make up the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, often called the Valley of the Sun.

Schools

Phoenix includes 325 public schools spread across 30 school districts, along with more than 200 charter and private schools. Because the city grew through annexation, many separate elementary districts (serving kindergarten through 8th grade) are paired with high school districts covering grades 9 through 12, while some areas are served by unified K-12 districts. Districts serving parts of the city include Phoenix Elementary School District #1, Balsz Elementary School District, Isaac Elementary School District, Deer Valley Unified School District, and Phoenix Union High School District, among others. Residents can look up district and attendance boundaries through the City of Phoenix's school districts resource page or each district's own boundary map.

Getting around

Phoenix sits at the intersection of Interstates 17 and 10, and transportation within the city relies primarily on private cars traveling freeways and surface streets overseen by the Arizona Department of Transportation. Valley Metro operates the area's public transit, including bus routes and a light rail and streetcar system connecting Phoenix with Tempe and Mesa. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is located about 4.3 miles by road east of the central business district, and the PHX Sky Train connects directly to the Valley Metro light rail at the 44th Street/Washington station.

Things to do

South Mountain Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America, offers trails, wildlife viewing, and a drivable road leading to a city-view lookout. Camelback Mountain, the highest point in the Phoenix Mountains, is used for hiking and climbing. The Heard Museum in Phoenix focuses on Native American art, culture, and history. Lake Pleasant Regional Park, just outside the northwest county limits, is used for mountain biking, hiking, camping, and fishing.
