Gilbert

Gilbert is a town in Maricopa County, Arizona, located southeast of Phoenix in the East Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was incorporated on July 6, 1920 and was once known as the "Hay Shipping Capital of the World," having grown from a farming and rail community into one of the largest incorporated towns in the United States.

Schools

Gilbert is served by three school districts: Gilbert Public Schools, Higley Unified School District, and Chandler Unified School District. Gilbert Public Schools operates 43 schools with over 35,000 students, Higley Unified operates 15 schools with nearly 12,000 students, and Chandler Unified operates 45 schools with over 44,500 students. ASU Polytechnic, located at Gilbert's eastern border, offers 30 degree programs with over 6,000 students enrolled. Boundary maps for each district are available through the district websites, and Gilbert Public Schools and Higley Unified both operate as open-enrollment districts.

Getting around

Gilbert is located eight miles from Interstate 10 and has direct access to U.S. 60 and the Loop 202 Freeway. The town is a member agency of Valley Metro and participates in a regional bus-rapid-transit service connecting to the light rail system's east-end station. The Gilbert Road/Main Street light rail station, the eastern terminus of the A Line, opened to revenue service on May 18, 2019 and includes a park-and-ride facility. Valley Metro bus routes serving Gilbert include Route 184 along Power Road, which runs between ASU Polytechnic and Mesa Community College and connects to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Homes and housing

Gilbert covers a land area of about 68 square miles with a population density of roughly 4,010 people per square mile. The town has approximately 100,336 total housing units, of which about 70.2 percent are owner-occupied and 25.9 percent are renter-occupied. Downtown Gilbert, centered along Gilbert Road between Elliot and Guadalupe Roads, contains historical buildings dating from the 1910s, predating Arizona statehood.
