Chandler

Chandler is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, located in the Southeast Valley of the Phoenix metropolitan area and bordered by Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, Gilbert, and the Gila River Indian Community. It is Arizona's fourth-most populous city, with a 2020 census population of 275,987.

Schools

Chandler Unified School District serves most of the city of Chandler, as well as portions of Gilbert and Queen Creek and all of Sun Lakes, and operates 32 elementary schools, ten junior high schools, and eight comprehensive high schools. Some parts of Chandler west of Arizona State Route 101 fall instead within the Kyrene School District and Tempe Union High School District, and some areas near the Mesa border are served by Mesa Public Schools. Getting around

Chandler is accessible by major freeways including US 60 (Superstition Freeway), Interstate 10, Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), and Loop 101 (Price Freeway). Loop 101 runs along Chandler's western edge and connects to Loop 202, which forms a southern arc through Chandler and Gilbert and ties into I-10. Valley Metro operates daily bus service throughout Chandler, with several routes connecting to METRO light rail in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, and a Park and Ride facility at Germann and Hamilton Street offers 460 parking spaces along with Route 112 express service to downtown Phoenix. Chandler is about 20 minutes from both Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Homes and housing

Chandler grew from a small agricultural community of about 3,800 people in 1950 to roughly 30,000 by 1980, with vast suburban residential areas subsequently developing over former agricultural plots. The city spans more than 65 square miles, and the Chandler area includes named residential areas such as Downtown Chandler, Ocotillo, Fulton Ranch, South Chandler, Cooper Commons, and Sun Groves.

Recreation options in Chandler include Veterans Oasis Park, Desert Breeze Park, and Tumbleweed Park. Downtown Chandler is a walkable historic core covering about one-half square mile, with free parking available in surface lots and five parking garages near shops, dining, and entertainment, as well as the Chandler Center for the Arts. Chandler Fashion Center, a shopping mall near the Loop 101 and Loop 202 interchange, also serves as a Valley Metro Bus transit center.
